Let's Talk About Books! We Love Books!

I am linking up with Deanna from Mrs. Jump's Class for her Let's Talk About Books Linky!  Let's just say that I LOVE books. Now that it is summertime, I am reading non-stop! During the school year, my reading is mostly school related, so the summer is my time to read for my own pleasure!  Today I went to the library and got four novels for myself, one teaching book, and a few books for one of the kiddos I will be tutoring!  I left, SOOO excited, about the new library and all the great things I found!
So, for me to choose one or just a couple of books each week is pretty difficult.  I decided to showcase a book that is relatively new to me.  This spring, my new teammate introduced me to a book called The Important Book.  We were working on a poetry and figurative language unit and it was almost Mother's Day.  She mentioned that she has used this in the past to have the kids write poems about about their moms.  This was PERFECT!  The book is full of poems and it lists all of the "important" things about each topic.  The kids wrote poems to their moms for Mother's Day saying "The important thing about my mom is...".  They turned out GREAT!

Then at the end of the year, the 3rd grade teachers wrote a poem for the kids, using the same framework.  We then made a collage for our classes, printed, and laminated them as a gift for our students   My kids LOVED these!  In fact, I printed a few extras and raffled them off.  They went like hotcakes!

I hope you get a chance to check out this book.  It is great for teaching poetry and main idea!

  2. Oh, I really like this book. I have it with my math books to use when discussing attributes. It has all sorts of uses, though, and is a good model for kids to use in their writing. Thanks.

  3. I love The Important Book! I use it at the beginning of the year. (Joanne, from Head Over Heels for Teaching gave me the idea, and she has a great product to map this out.) Students use the book as a model to introduce others (after interviewing them). I really like how you used it at the end of the year. It would be great to tie in a beginning and end of the year activity.

    Thank you!
